Step into the wonders of Jordan on an unforgettable family journey through the country’s most iconic destinations. From the ancient ruins of Jerash and the legendary city of Petra to the dramatic landscapes of Wadi Rum and the relaxing shores of the Red Sea, this thoughtfully designed itinerary blends cultural discovery with time to unwind—perfect for families seeking both adventure and comfort.

Some travel days involve longer drives of up to six to eight hours, offering opportunities to enjoy Jordan’s varied scenery and connect with fellow travellers. Expect warm daytime temperatures and cooler evenings, particularly in desert areas, so layered clothing is recommended. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and reusable water bottles are essential for exploring sites such as Petra. Modest dress is generally expected in public areas, while standard swimwear is appropriate at beaches and resorts. Please note that alcohol consumption is permitted only in licensed venues.

Welcome to Jordan! Upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, transfer to your hotel in central Amman. The remainder of the day is free to relax or begin exploring the capital at your own pace.

If time allows, visit nearby highlights such as:

  • The impressive Roman Theatre, dating back to the 2nd century
  • The historic Citadel, offering sweeping views across the city and home to ancient ruins and the Jordan Archaeological Museum

In the evening, consider strolling along lively Rainbow Street to sample local cuisine.

A group welcome meeting will take place at 5:00 PM to introduce your guide and fellow travellers and review the journey ahead.

After breakfast at your hotel, journey north to Ajlun. Begin the day with a scenic walk through Ajlun Forest Reserve along the picturesque Soap House Trail, surrounded by oak and pistachio trees. Visit a traditional workshop where local women produce handmade olive oil soap using time-honoured techniques.

Continue to Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. Explore remarkable ruins including:

  • The Oval Forum
  • Colonnaded Street
  • Roman theatres
  • Temples and ancient city gates

After time to wander the archaeological site, return to Amman for a relaxing evening.

Travel south toward Petra along the Desert Highway, stopping first in Madaba, renowned for its intricate Byzantine mosaics. Visit St. George’s Church to see the famous 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land.

Continue to Mount Nebo, a significant biblical site believed to be the place where Moses viewed the Promised Land.

Later, visit Dana Village, a traditional hillside settlement overlooking Jordan’s largest nature reserve. Enjoy a gentle walk through terraced gardens and local craft workshops while learning about village life and conservation efforts.

Arrive in Petra in the evening for an overnight stay.

Spend the day discovering the extraordinary ancient city of Petra, Jordan’s legendary “Rose City” and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Enter the site through the dramatic Siq canyon, where towering sandstone walls lead to the unforgettable first view of the iconic Treasury.

Continue exploring Petra’s vast archaeological landscape, including ancient temples, royal tombs, and the impressive rock-cut theatre. Those seeking a challenge may choose to hike up to the magnificent Monastery or follow scenic trails offering sweeping views across the valley.

This evening, enjoy a hands-on cultural experience at a local cooking school. Under the guidance of a Jordanian chef, learn to prepare traditional dishes such as hummus and baba ghanoush, followed by classic regional favourites like Maqluba, Kabsa, or Mujadara. After the class, sit down together to savour the meal you have created and take home recipes to recreate the flavours of Jordan.

Note: Petra involves extensive walking; a moderate level of fitness is recommended.

A complimentary horse ride from the entrance to the Siq is included in the Petra ticket price for group visitors. However, GAT advises against using this service due to associated safety concerns and potential insurance liabilities.

This morning, visit Little Petra, a smaller but equally fascinating Nabataean site, where you’ll enjoy tea with a local Bedouin family and gain insight into traditional desert hospitality.

Continue south to the spectacular landscapes of Wadi Rum, one of Jordan’s most dramatic desert environments, known for its towering sandstone formations, vast red dunes, and ancient rock inscriptions left by early civilisations.

Upon arrival, set out on an exciting 4WD desert excursion, travelling through narrow canyons and across sweeping desert scenery, with opportunities to view natural rock bridges and striking panoramic viewpoints. Optional camel rides are available for those wishing to experience the desert in a traditional way.

Tonight, settle into a traditional Bedouin camp and enjoy a memorable dinner prepared in an underground oven using time-honoured methods. Accommodation is simple yet comfortable, offering a unique chance to experience the tranquillity of the desert and the beauty of the star-filled night sky.

Travel from the desert to the Red Sea coast and enjoy a day of relaxation in Jordan’s only seaside city. The resort town of Aqaba offers warm, calm waters and vibrant coral reefs just offshore, making it an excellent destination for swimming and snorkelling.

Spend the afternoon at leisure—explore the colourful marine life, join an optional boat excursion, stroll along the waterfront promenade, or simply unwind by the pool. Those interested in history may wish to visit the 14th-century Ottoman Fort (if available), associated with the Arab Revolt and the campaigns of T.E. Lawrence.

Aqaba also boasts a lively dining scene, with numerous cafés and restaurants serving fresh seafood and local specialities.

Depart Aqaba and travel north toward the Dead Sea, descending steadily through dramatic desert landscapes until you reach the shores of the world’s lowest point on Earth (approximately 3 hours). The Dead Sea is a unique salt lake, renowned for its mineral-rich waters and exceptionally high salinity, which allows visitors to float effortlessly on the surface.

Enjoy time at a private beach with easy access to the water and swimming pools. Take the opportunity to experience the famous therapeutic mud, known for its natural minerals and skin-nourishing properties. Towels are available for hire, so be sure to bring your swimwear.

In the evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner and reflect on the highlights of your journey through Jordan.

After breakfast, your family adventure comes to an end at the Dead Sea.

Transfers to Queen Alia International Airport are approximately 1 hour by road.
